Called on the United States of America, the Government of Myanmar, and the elite, on Friday, to restore calm and "promote dialogue" in the wake of bloody clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Mandalay.
The spokeswoman said the U.S. State Department, Victoria Nuland, the United States welcomed the efforts made by the government and the elite and heads of civil society organizations and the leaders of political parties "to promote dialogue and increase tolerance in a way that respects human rights and the law works."
Nuland expressed U.S. concern "serious concern" about the continuing sectarian violence and loss of life and damage to property in and around the town of "Mikhtella" which lies about 120 kilometers south of Mandalay.
